Between 20 and 22 November 2025, Medical University–Varna held an International Scientific Conference on Weight Management as a Solid Basis for Cardio-Renal-Metabolic Health, implemented under project No BG-RRP-2.004-0009-C02 “MU-Varna: Enhancement of Translational Excellence Achievement in Medicine (MUVE-TEAM)", funded by the European Union–NextGenerationEU, through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Republic of Bulgaria.
In the framework of the three-day forum, scientists, clinicians and health professionals from Australia, England, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Germany, Italy, Turkey and other countries presented the latest scientific data, clinical practices and policies related to overweight as a key factor in the development of cardio-metabolic and kidney diseases.
Current data related to obesity worldwide and in Bulgaria, as well as modern approaches in the treatment of overweight in childhood were on the agenda of the forum. The participants in the Conference were introduced to the latest research on the prevalence of overweight among children and adults, followed by discussions on the relationship between obesity and the main manifestations of cardiovascular-renal-metabolic syndrome.
In the context of cardio-rental-metabolic health, the experts focused on various diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, heart failure and chronic kidney disease, therapeutic and behavioural strategies, including nutritional interventions, lifestyle changes and specific clinical cases such as rare forms of obesity and increased risk in children with autism. Legislative and health policies targeted at limiting the spread of obesity were also among the topics discussed.
The Conference also included a module on practical training related to the implementation of scientific evidence in the management of obesity, and a round table discussion on the regional challenges facing the Balkan countries in the fight against CaReMe syndrome. The event was concluded with a summary of the results and an outline of future directions for scientific and clinical collaboration.
