The Rector of MU-Varna Presented an Annual Report on the Activities at a Meeting of the General Assembly

The Rector of Medical University–Varna Prof. Dr. Valentin Ignatov presented a report on the activities of the University for the period March 2022–March 2023 at a meeting of the General Assembly, which took place on 20 March 2023. The meeting was held on the basis of Article 28 (1) of the Higher Education Act, Article 45 (1) of the Rules of Procedure of Medical University–Varna, and Decision of the Academic Council under point 1 of Protocol No 65/09.03.2023. The report was adopted by a full majority and followed by applause by the members present.

The results reported indicate clearly that the preceding year is an extremely successful stage in the development of MU-Varna. Prof. Ignatov pointed out that the trend of sustained high interest exhibited by prospective students and the growing number of students trained at the University both from our country and abroad had been reinforced during that period. The total number of students is currently 6 234, whereas 4 353 of them are Bulgarian students (70 %), and 1 881 – foreign students (30 %). The increase has been 125 % since 2012.

The financial results of MU-Varna are excellent, and the available funds have soared by BGN 7 863 749 within a year. During the reporting period, the remuneration of the lecturers and employees at MU–Varna was raised in the months of April, September and December by BGN 3 850 268, and the growth of the average gross salary now is 6.32 %, currently amounting to BGN 3 114. The government subsidy has been increased by BGN 5 302 717, the subsidies for training expenditures have grown by BGN 4 439 620, and the income from student tuition has risen by BGN 6 341 744 within one year. The amount of scholarships for undergraduate and doctoral students has also grown, with the funds paid amounting to BGN 2 961 008. The growth in own revenues for one year is also significant–BGN 2 876 628.

Further on, Prof. Ignatov emphasised that the capital investments in MU–Varna for 2022 amounted to a total of BGN 6 120 486, the investments being mainly in new highly specialised equipment and modernisation, renovation of the educational and practical bases and research laboratories, opening a new student canteen, etc.

Four new study programmes have been launched – a Bachelor's Degree Programme “Biomedical Engineering and Technology" and Master's Degree Programmes “Clinical Logopaedia", “Cosmetology" and “Technology and Innovation Transfer in Pharmacy". MU-Varna boasts 1 144 graduates, including 205 foreign graduates from 20 countries over the past year.

The outcomes designated in the Rector's report also indicate a 22 % growth in publication activities within one year, development and upgrade of simulation training, launching new structures and training sectors, active participation in international projects, Research Fund, programmes and projects of the Ministry of Education and Science, and growth of the relative annual share of projects under the Science Fund, numerous campaigns conducted for the benefit of society. The students at MU-Varna have won plenty of gold prizes at national and regional sports tournaments, and the University is a vice-champion in the final overall ranking at the national Universiade.

As a result of the successful management, for the second time, MU-Varna has been granted the management rights of UMHAT “St. Marina"–Varna for a new five-year period.  Furthermore, in May 2022, the Municipal Council in Varna provided free of charge the company shares of the Specialised Hospital for Active Treatment in Ophthalmology–Varna EOOD, which has been successfully managed by MU-Varna since 2019. Thanks to the encouragement and intensive development of science, MU-Varna is among the few universities in the country, designated as a research university.

The Rector put the stress on the enhancement of the educational capacity, the opening of an Affiliate in Dobrich, the development of simulation training, the launching of new study programmes, and investments in modernisation of the facilities, as well as in educational technologies and equipment as major perspectives in the development of MU-Varna.

During the General Assembly, the Executive Director of UMHAT “St. Marina"–Varna Prof. Dr. Silva Andonova, the Manager of the Eye Hospital Prof. Dr. Christina Grupcheva, the Manager of SHOGAT “Prof. Dr. D. Stamatov"–Varna Prof. Dr. Emil Kovachev and the Head of the Neurosurgery Clinic Prof. Dr. Yavor Enchev extended gratitude to Prof. Dr. Valentin Ignatov and the Academic Management of MU-Varna for the beneficial cooperation, investments and joint projects.
Prof. Ignatov underlined that the excellent results were due to the dedicated work of everyone in the team of MU-Varna.
