The ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Clinic at UMHAT “St. Marina" – Varna can boast new high-tech endoscopic surgical equipment, significantly expanding the possibilities for diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, and throat. The technology provides crystal-clear imaging and high magnification, enabling highly precise surgical procedures, including in areas close to vital structures such as the eyes and the base of the skull. The main benefits for patients include minimal trauma, increased safety, shorter hospital stays, reduced postoperative pain, and faster recovery.
The head of the Clinic, Prof. Dr. Nikolay Sapundzhiev highlighted that the medical team follows the principle that surgery must be both effective and minimally invasive. He underlined that the introduction of the new system is an important step towards more predictable outcomes and a higher quality of medical care.
The physicians at the Clinic have already performed the first procedures using the new equipment–surgery on a tree-year-old child with recurrent adenoid hypertrophy, and an intervention on an adult patient with a tumour formation in the nasal and paranasal sinus area. According to specialists, the system provides excellent intraoperative diagnostics and detailed visualization of the surgical field. Thanks to its wide viewing angle and high resolution, the system allows for greater precision in hard-to-reach anatomical areas, including the nose, paranasal sinuses, middle ear, and throat.
The equipment also includes an aspiration and irrigation system that facilitates the surgical process and maintains clear visibility during procedures. The improved image quality and contrast enable more accurate differentiation between anatomical structures and pathological changes, supporting the selection of an optimal surgical approach and reducing the risk of complications.
Prof. Sapundzhiev further emphasized that the new endoscopic system at the ENT Clinic is indispensable in modern practice for several most commonly applied interventions:
- Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS): a preferred method for chronic sinusitis and nasal polyposis. It allows targeted minimally invasive intervention only in affected areas while preserving healthy mucosa, resulting in less bleeding and faster recovery, eliminating the need of the traditional nasal tamponades.
- Endoscopic Adenoidectomy (third tonsil surgery): Video-assisted surgery in children ensures complete removal of the inflamed tissue and significantly reduces the risk of recurrence. Endoscopic access to the epipharynx also enables an advanced new level of surgery and treatment of tumour processes in this area in adults.
- Endoscopic Ear Surgery: The new instruments enable highly precise reconstructive procedures of the eardrum and middle ear, qualitatively complementing traditional techniques using an operating microscope.
The introduction of this modern endoscopic technology is another step forward in the development of high-tech medicine and in the improvement of the quality of diagnosis, treatment, and medical education at UMHAT “St. Marina" – Varna.
