Seven paddle boards have been provided to develop and promote rowing sports among students at Medical University - Varna. Since last autumn students have been able to practise canoeing and kayaking in real conditions on Lake Varna at the training facilities of the Black Sea Breeze Canoe-Kayak Sports Club.
"The first paddle boards have already been delivered, and we are expecting two more competition ones," explained Assoc. Prof. Zhulieta Videnova, head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports at MU – Varna. She also pointed out that there was a large number of students interested in the sport, including lots of female ones. Assoc. Prof. Videnova added that every week a survey was conducted targeted at recruiting more applicants for that sport, and the University provided free transportation from MU-Varna to the training facilities and back.
The students' coach is Mr. Paisiy Lyubenov, a former member of the Bulgarian national team, winner of four medals from World Canoe-Kayak Championships, and three gold and two silver medals from Men's European Championships.
The initiative for the development of these sports was launched by Prof. Dimitar Raykov, Rector of Medical University - Varna. Expanding sports opportunities and promoting an active lifestyle among students is one of the priorities of the educational institution.
