The Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at UMHAT “St. Marina" held a specialised training session focused on the surgical treatment of a rare elbow joint injury. The guest lecturer was Dr. Boyan Valentinov – an orthopaedic and trauma surgeon from University Hospital “Kanev" – Ruse, who is one of Bulgaria's prominent experts in the correction of severe post-traumatic deformities of the forearm and hand in both children and adults.

Dr. Valentinov presented to his colleagues in Varna a modern technique for surgical treatment of a complex and relatively rarely reported clinical condition in orthopaedic practice – Monteggia fracture, which causes instability and dislocation of the humeroradial joint. According to specialists, when such instability remains undiagnosed and untreated in a timely manner, it can lead to progressive post-traumatic changes and, subsequently, severe deformities affecting the entire elbow complex.

As part of the training, the specialists also conducted a consultation for a young patient with a similar condition. The medical teams from the two hospitals discussed the available options for subsequent treatment.

“The cooperation between the teams of UMHAT “St. Marina" – Varna and UMHAT “Kanev" – Ruse is an example of effective professional collaboration and exchange of expertise in the best interests of patients," emphasised Prof. Dr. Dimitar Raykov – Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at UMHAT “St. Marina" and Rector of MU – Varna. According to Prof. Raykov, initiatives of this kind create valuable opportunities for sharing expertise and applying specialised techniques in the management of complex and rare orthopaedic cases.
