Hristo Botyov Petkov, known as Hristo Botev, (6 January 1848 - 1 June 1876), is a Bulgarian national hero, revolutionary, poet and publicist. Adamant internationalist, he defended the right for self-awareness and self-government of the Bulgarian people, he urged for a radical revolutionary struggle, opposing the "enlightening" ideology, he was fighting against the exploitation of the socially weak people by the more powerful ones. The literary and publicistic heritage of Botev is not large in volume, but its artistic merit is among the highest achievements not only in the revival but in the entire Bulgarian literature.

This day has been commemorated officially on Peak Vola since 1901. One minute of silence to pay tribute to the Bulgarian heroes was signalled for the first time across the whole country on 2 June 1948, at 12 o'clock sharp. After the withdrawal of Botev's detachment to Peak Vola on 1 June 1876 and from there to the peaks of Kamarata, Kupena, Okolchitsa, where they had been fighting throughout the whole day, in the evening the detachment headquarters gathered in order to discuss their further actions. During that meeting Hristo Botev was killed. Nicola Voynovski was appointed his deputy. After that the detachment went southeast. Botev's detachment held a battle in the area of Rashov Dol, near Lyutibrod. Georgi Apostolov and 10 other rebels perished in this battle. The group, led by Nikola Voynovski, managed to withdraw to the village of Zverino.
