The Medical Optician specialty was established in 2013. A Medical Optician is a specialist who provides eye care and optical vision correction. They are qualified to work in optical shops, optical centers, workshops, factories, and warehouses for optical devices, as well as in ophthalmology practices.
The content of the qualification profile for the "Medical Optician" program aligns with the stated objectives and is developed in accordance with European directives and user needs, in line with the curriculum. Theoretical and practical training during the program is aimed at acquiring in-depth knowledge in the following areas: fundamental medical and biological sciences, detailed training in optics, physical and clinical refraction; specialized medical knowledge and skills in optics; organizational and managerial competencies; and communication, ethical, research, legal, and other relevant skills.
Faculty and experts from other departments across the four faculties of the Medical University of Varna are involved in student training. A key training base is the
Specialized Eye Hospital for Active Treatment – Varna, where students have the unique opportunity to participate in clinical and diagnostic processes and observe the application of cutting-edge ophthalmological technologies.
Graduates of the “Medical Optician" program earn a
Professional Bachelor's Degree and have the opportunity to further their education by pursuing a
Master's Degree in Optometry, within Professional Field 7.5 Health Care, which is offered by the Faculty of Public Health at the Medical University of Varna.
The three categories of eye care professionals work in synergy, aiming to develop a comprehensive approach to prevention, screening, optical correction, and treatment.
